It’s hard to make money selling parts these days. I use a parts guy who ran his own parts store for years, but now operates the parts operation for a large private shop. This Holley carburetor parts kit is an artifact of the business where my parts guy is now working.

So cool!

I love old parts displays like this. Although you’d have to force me to use a brass float or black paper gasket these days.

Good parts guys are the unsung heroes of the automotive world. Another unsung hero is the bicycle parts guy. While rebuilding an old Trek, I had a need for a set of V-brakes. Even though they were busy building bikes for Christmas, my favorite shop guy took a few minutes to source a used set from the parts shed out back. A few days later, I discovered I needed a set of lever adjusters. My favorite shop was closed, but the other parts guy at the other shop came through for me. It’s amazing what can be accomplished if you can find the right parts.

Bicycles. I own a fairly nice one. Lots of time and not a lot of profit in the bike business.

Only at the low end. Have you seen the price of bikes lately?

This is why I’ve always maintained my older “nice” bikes. I have three of my own and two more for the kids. I also have a couple of extra frames that I intend to build up someday. What I never had time/space/money for with project cars, I made up for with project bikes.

I ride a Canondale Bad Boy Ultra with a bunch of heavy stuff bolted onto it and I liken the ride to a ‘96 Impala SS. I was truly astonished by what a “real” bicycle does for the riding experience.

A friend of mine at church just paid over $30k for a bicycle. He has an insurance policy for it. I cannot relate.

Then again, I have over $1500 invested in mine so far... (I need to get back on it.)

I always liked the Bad Boy. It’s a really good option if you can have only one bike but like to ride both on and off-road. My Cannondale is a Super-V which I used with slicks for commuting and knobbies for offf-road. My other (wrecked) Cannondale was an R-600. My other bikes are a Redline Conquest cyclocross bike and a ‘76 model Schwinn World Sport road bike.

I only ride on the street. And I weigh about 230 pounds and I frequently have 10 pounds or more of crap that I’m hauling.

Welcome to the “Clydesdale” club. I am a founding member.

I have an eye toward touring someday. It’s not unusual for me to pull a trailer. It used to be filled with kids, but once they were too big for it, I converted it to a flatbed. Now I’ll strap some gear on it just to keep myself in the right mindset. It also encourages cars to give me a wider berth as they pass.
